Kampala, June 28: Uganda's military chief, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has ordered the closure of two prominent independent media outlets, Daily Monitor and NTV Uganda, intensifying concerns over press freedom in the country.
Security personnel were deployed outside the media houses' offices in Kampala, disrupting newspaper printing and television broadcasts. The move followed remarks by Kainerugaba on social media, where he said the outlets would remain shut until further notice.
The affected organisations are part of the Nation Media Group, one of East Africa's largest independent media companies. Journalists, media organisations and opposition leaders have criticised the action, calling it a setback for independent journalism and freedom of expression in Uganda.
The government has not issued a detailed explanation for the shutdown.
