Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates is raising fresh concerns over the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, saying governments must act urgently to manage its growing risks
. Gates is seeking a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year to discuss global cooperation on AI safety. His team is tentatively working toward a meeting during his planned China visit in November.
Gates believes China could support restrictions on the release of potentially dangerous AI models if the United States takes the lead. He also wants countries to monitor AI systems capable of creating molecules or potentially enabling biological attacks, while avoiding measures that could unnecessarily slow technological innovation.
The technology billionaire said recent AI developments have heightened his concerns about hacking, job displacement and the psychological impact of AI systems. He has called for a new international organisation to oversee AI risks, drawing lessons from nuclear inspections, aviation safety and international environmental agreements.
Gates has also proposed protecting certain jobs for humans and exploring taxes on AI-driven labour replacement to help fund social safety nets and worker support.
