Africa Demands Permanent UN Security Council Seat: Sierra Leone First Lady Launches Fiery Attack

Sierra Leone First Lady Dr. Fatima Maada Bio demands permanent African seats on the UN Security Council, calling the current 1945 power structure outdated and unfair to 1.5 billion

FREETOWN | August 24, 2026:

Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, has launched a strong attack on Africa’s continued exclusion from permanent representation on the United Nations Security Council, demanding that the continent finally receive a permanent seat with veto power. Speaking during a fireside discussion at Harvard University, Dr. Bio questioned how a continent of 54 sovereign nations and more than 1.5 billion people can remain without a permanent voice in the world’s most powerful peace and security body.

Dr. Bio argued that the UN Security Council’s present structure is outdated and continues to reflect the geopolitical realities of 1945 rather than the world of today. She stressed that Africa has grown dramatically in population, political importance and global influence, yet its representation at the highest level of international decision-making remains severely limited.

The Sierra Leone First Lady also pointed to the irony that Africa remains at the centre of numerous conflicts, peacekeeping missions and humanitarian crises that frequently dominate the Security Council’s agenda. Yet, despite carrying a huge share of the consequences of decisions on global peace and security, African nations remain locked out of permanent, veto-wielding representation.

Dr. Bio’s remarks have once again put the spotlight on the long-running demand for permanent African seats at the UN Security Council. She argued that continuing to deny Africa an equal voice amounts to a deep institutional imbalance and called for a major overhaul of the global system so that representation reflects the realities and power dynamics of the 21st century.
