New Delhi, June 23: Congress leader Pawan Khera has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to weaken opposition parties through what he termed “Operation Kichad,” alleging efforts to expand its political influence by encouraging opposition legislators and MPs to switch sides.
Addressing the media, Khera questioned why elected representatives were reportedly being persuaded to join the ruling party despite the BJP already being in power at the Centre.
Referring to the 2024 Lok Sabha election results, Khera said the BJP had fallen short of its ambitious target of 400 seats and stopped at 240. He alleged that attempts were now being made to strengthen its position by attracting lawmakers from rival parties.
“Are governments formed to serve the people or to engineer defections?” Khera asked, criticizing what he described as attempts to destabilize opposition parties in states where the BJP has faced electoral challenges.
The remarks come amid ongoing political sparring between the BJP and opposition parties over allegations of horse-trading and political defections.
The BJP has consistently denied such allegations, maintaining that leaders who join the party do so voluntarily because of confidence in its leadership, governance model, and policies.
