Kolkata, June 14: Amid growing speculation over internal differences within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), senior party MP Kalyan Banerjee has attempted to calm the controversy surrounding his recent remarks on party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. In a statement that has triggered fresh political discussions, Kalyan Banerjee said he considers Abhishek “like a son” and that “a father’s duty is to forgive his son’s mistakes.”
The comments come at a time when political observers are closely watching developments inside the ruling TMC. While the party leadership has repeatedly projected unity, recent exchanges and public statements by senior leaders have fueled speculation about underlying tensions within the organization.
Kalyan Banerjee also widened the political attack by claiming that democracy is under threat in the country. He argued that West Bengal has historically remained a politically vibrant state where opposition voices continue to exist, unlike situations where political rivals are completely wiped out. His remarks are being seen as both a defense of the state’s political landscape and a message aimed at critics questioning TMC’s internal functioning.
With crucial political battles on the horizon, the latest controversy has once again brought the spotlight on the relationship between senior leaders and the next generation of TMC leadership. Opposition parties are likely to seize upon the developments, while the ruling party faces the challenge of containing perceptions of factionalism and maintaining a united front ahead of future electoral contests.
