Narmadapuram (Madhya Pradesh), June 13:
In a significant verdict, a court in Madhya Pradesh's Narmadapuram district has sentenced 14 men to life imprisonment for the 2022 mob lynching of a Maharashtra resident who was allegedly attacked on suspicion of cattle smuggling.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Tabassum Khan delivered the judgment in Seoni Malwa, convicting all 14 accused on charges including murder, attempt to murder, rioting and wrongful restraint. The court held the accused responsible for the fatal assault that led to the death of 50-year-old Nazir Ahmad.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on August 3, 2022, near Barakhad Village when a truck transporting cattle was intercepted by a group of men who suspected illegal cattle smuggling. The occupants were allegedly dragged from the vehicle and beaten with sticks and iron rods. Nazir Ahmad suffered critical head injuries and later died during treatment, while two other occupants survived the attack.
Investigators stated that video recordings of the assault became a key piece of evidence during the trial, helping prosecutors establish the sequence of events and identify those involved. The case had attracted nationwide attention amid ongoing concerns over vigilante violence linked to allegations of cattle smuggling.
After nearly four years of legal proceedings, the court found all 14 accused guilty and imposed life imprisonment. Following the verdict, relatives of the convicts reportedly staged protests outside the court premises, claiming the accused had been influenced and mobilized in the name of cow protection.
