The rapid rise of secret dating and relationship apps is emerging as a growing social concern in India, with experts warning that digital platforms are increasingly contributing to marital discord and family instability. While technology was designed to connect people and improve lives, mental health professionals say many users are turning to these apps in search of temporary emotional or personal gratification, often leading to extramarital relationships and strained family bonds
. Reports indicate that millions of users have joined such platforms over the past few years, with married individuals forming a significant share of the user base. Psychiatrists attribute the trend to emotional vulnerability, loneliness, and changing social attitudes. Analysts warn that if the pattern continues unchecked, it could weaken traditional family structures and increase domestic conflicts.
At the same time, official statistics present a contrasting picture. India's overall crime rate has declined by around 6 percent compared to the previous year, according to recent NCRB data. However, cyber-related offences continue to rise steadily. Family courts across the country are also witnessing an increase in divorce cases, with women reportedly initiating a large share of separation petitions.
Tamil Nadu and Karnataka remain among the states reporting the highest numbers of divorce filings. A separate government statistical report highlights another significant demographic shift. Across India, women living alone due to divorce, widowhood, separation, or other circumstances significantly outnumber men.
The trend is particularly pronounced in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, where the number of women living without partners is estimated to be four to five times higher than that of men.
