Rajya Sabha member and National President of the National BC Welfare Association, R. Krishnaiah, held a crucial meeting with BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, urging for an immediate resolution to the shortage of hostel and gurukula seats faced by BC students in Telangana state. He requested the establishment of 120 new BC college hostels and 150 BC gurukulas across the state. R. Krishnaiah explained that currently, thousands of students are struggling due to a lack of hostel seats, leading to high fees in private hostels, and some are even dropping out of their studies.
He called for the approval of new hostels in Hyderabad as well as in Mahabubnagar, Sangareddy, Vikarabad, Warangal, Nalgonda, Karimnagar, Medchal, Ranga Reddy, and Khammam districts. Despite the high demand for admissions in BC gurukulas, thousands of students are losing opportunities due to a lack of seats. He noted that with a 99% pass rate in SSC and Intermediate, there has been increased interest in gurukulas. He demanded the establishment of an additional 150 gurukulas, stating that there are not enough gurukulas for the 52% BC population in the state.
R. Krishnaiah also suggested utilizing vacant classrooms in existing gurukulas to start additional sections and increasing the seat count from 30 to 40 in each class of junior colleges. He explained that this would not impose an additional financial burden on the government. Minister Ponnam Prabhakar responded positively to R. Krishnaiah's proposals and assured that he would discuss with the Chief Minister to take action on new hostels, gurukulas, additional sections, and increasing seat counts.
