Hyderabad: A shocking incident has triggered panic in the city after two minor girls reportedly died and several others fell critically ill after consuming mangoes, raising serious concerns over fruit safety and chemical contamination.
According to initial information, Bhuvaneshwari (17) and Sandhya (10) developed severe vomiting and diarrhoea shortly after eating mangoes at their residence. They were rushed to hospital in a critical condition but later succumbed while undergoing treatment. Other family members, including children, are still undergoing medical care.
The victims are from a migrant family originally from Bidar, Karnataka, who had shifted to Hyderabad for livelihood. The mangoes were reportedly purchased locally and consumed by the family, following which all members fell sick within a short span of time.
Police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation into the incident. Hyderabad Police Commissioner Sajjanar has ordered a comprehensive probe to determine whether harmful ripening chemicals, pesticide contamination, or any other toxic substance led to the tragedy.
Authorities have collected fruit samples and food remnants from the house and sent them for forensic and laboratory testing. Doctors are also examining medical reports and post-mortem findings to identify the exact cause of death.
The incident has sparked widespread concern as officials also examine whether unsafe fruit ripening practices in the market chain could be responsible. Investigations are continuing.
