Shoulder pain can result from rotator cuff injuries, arthritis, frozen shoulder, or neck-related nerve problems. Learn about symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

Hyderabad, June 14: Shoulder pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal problems affecting people of all ages. As the shoulder joint is among the most mobile joints in the human body, it allows a wide range of arm movements but is also more vulnerable to injuries, wear and tear, and muscle-related disorders.

Medical experts say shoulder pain is increasingly being reported among athletes, manual laborers, and people who spend long hours working on computers. The condition can range from mild discomfort to severe pain that restricts daily activities and affects quality of life.

One of the leading causes of shoulder pain is damage to the rotator cuff, a group of four muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder and control arm movements. Aging, repetitive movements, overuse, and injuries can weaken these structures, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced strength. Rotator cuff problems are particularly common in people over the age of 40.

Another major cause is osteoarthritis, a condition in which the cartilage cushioning the shoulder joint gradually wears away. As a result, bones rub against each other, causing pain, stiffness, and limited mobility. In addition, frozen shoulder—a condition where the capsule surrounding the shoulder joint becomes thick and tight—can significantly reduce movement and is more frequently seen in people with diabetes.

Doctors also note that shoulder pain may sometimes originate from the neck rather than the shoulder itself. Compression of nerves in the cervical spine can cause pain that radiates into the shoulder and arm.

Common symptoms include pain while moving the shoulder, difficulty lifting the arm, weakness, stiffness, reduced range of motion, and worsening pain at night. Patients may also find it difficult to lift objects or perform routine tasks.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination and, when necessary, imaging tests such as X-rays, MRI scans, ultrasound examinations, and blood tests to assess the condition of muscles, tendons, joints, and bones.

Treatment depends on the underlying cause and severity of the condition. In many cases, rest, pain-relieving medications, and physiotherapy can provide significant relief. Physiotherapy exercises help improve flexibility, strengthen shoulder muscles, and restore movement. Anti-inflammatory medications and steroid injections may also be recommended in selected cases.

For severe injuries, including complete tendon tears or advanced joint damage, surgery may be required. Modern arthroscopic procedures allow surgeons to treat many shoulder conditions through small incisions, reducing recovery time and improving outcomes.

Health experts advise regular exercise, maintaining proper posture, lifting heavy objects correctly, avoiding excessive strain on the shoulder, and controlling conditions such as diabetes to reduce the risk of shoulder-related problems.
