BUNIA (Democratic Republic of the Congo), May 31:
The head of the World Health Organization visited Bunia in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, the centre of the country's ongoing Ebola outbreak, to assess response efforts and support frontline health workers.
During the visit, he urged nations to reconsider travel restrictions linked to the outbreak, saying such measures can hinder emergency response operations and affect the movement of medical supplies and personnel.
Health authorities continue to work on identifying cases, tracing contacts, and strengthening community awareness as they seek to contain the spread of the virus. Officials emphasized the importance of early detection and cooperation from local communities to reduce transmission.
International partners have increased support for the response, providing funding, medical equipment, and technical assistance. However, aid organizations warn that challenges such as limited healthcare resources and difficult terrain continue to complicate containment efforts.
The World Health Organization expressed confidence that with coordinated action and sustained support, the outbreak can be brought under control while minimizing its impact on affected communities.
