Hegseth Says U.S. "Just Getting Started" in Iran War as Conflict Intensifies and Spreads

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth declared that the American military campaign against Iran is accelerating, with plans for deeper strikes

Breaking News

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth declared that the American military campaign against Iran is accelerating, with plans for deeper strikes into Iranian territory. This comes amid reports of expanding U.S.-Israeli operations dubbed "Operation Epic Fury."

Hegseth's Key Statements

Hegseth emphasized that the war has "only just begun," with U.S. forces deploying twice the air power of the 2003 Iraq "shock and awe" campaign. He predicted total dominance over Iranian airspace within days, allowing continuous day-and-night operations to neutralize missiles, defenses, and leadership. Hegseth called the Iranian regime "toast," stating they "cannot outlast" U.S. strength as more bombers and heavier munitions arrive.

Military Progress

ReportedJoint Chiefs Chair General Caine reported Iran's ballistic missile capabilities reduced by 86%, its navy "decimated" at the bottom of the Persian Gulf, and air defenses neutralized for U.S. air superiority along the southern coast. Strikes will soon expand inland, targeting weapons storage, nuclear sites, and infrastructure buried underground. Objectives include dismantling missile production, naval power, and rapid reconstitution ability, with no fixed timeline—potentially weeks.

Escalation and Regional Spread

The conflict, now in its fifth day as of March 4, 2026, involves intensified Israeli strikes on Tehran and Iranian drone attacks killing civilians in Israel, Gulf apartments, and the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet HQ in Bahrain. Iran has launched over 500 ballistic missiles and 2,000 drones, becoming more indiscriminate as resources dwindle. U.S. losses include six service members killed, but officials assert ample precision munitions.

Broader Context

President Trump granted full authority to commanders, stressing the operation will take "as long as necessary." Hegseth ruled out nation-building like Iraq, focusing on military degradation without endless commitment. Iran's Ayatollah Khamenei's funeral was postponed amid the chaos.
