The government led by Chief Minister Vijay has announced a statewide crackdown on drugs, rowdy elements, and crimes against women, claiming early progress in restoring law and order across Tamil Nadu.
Officials said strict enforcement drives are being carried out daily, with surveillance and arrests of suspected offenders intensified across multiple districts. As part of the reform measures, the government has also initiated the closure of 717 liquor outlets operated by TASMAC near schools, temples, and other sensitive locations
Supporters of the government argue that these actions reflect a “zero-tolerance policy” and demonstrate early intent to restore discipline in public life. They also claim that a culture of drug abuse and street crime had been allowed to expand in previous years, contributing to youth involvement in illegal activities.
However, critics and opposition voices have questioned the government’s narrative, pointing out that the administration has been in power for only a short period and cautioning against drawing conclusions on law-and-order performance at this stage.
In a recent incident in Sulur, involving the death of a 10-year-old girl, the Chief Minister reportedly assured the victim’s family that the case would be investigated thoroughly and those responsible would face strict punishment.
Authorities have also urged parents and guardians to take greater responsibility for child safety, particularly warning against sending young children alone to nearby shops or public areas during late hours, citing rising safety concerns.
The government maintains that its anti-crime drive will continue “without interruption,” while political debate continues over whether such actions represent genuine reform or early-stage political positioning.
