Bengaluru: Karnataka Congress legislators have unanimously elected D. K. Shivakumar as the new leader of the Congress Legislature Party, clearing the way for him to take charge as the state's next Chief Minister.
The decision was taken at a meeting of Congress MLAs in Bengaluru. Outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah proposed Shivakumar’s name, which was supported by senior leader Dr. G. Parameshwara. The proposal received unanimous backing from the legislators present.
Announcing the decision, Congress General Secretary K. C. Venugopal said the party had reached a consensus on the leadership transition, reflecting unity within the state unit.
Shivakumar, who has been serving as Deputy Chief Minister and Karnataka Congress president, is widely credited with strengthening the party's organization and playing a key role in its electoral successes. His elevation marks a new chapter for the Congress government in Karnataka.
Party leaders expressed confidence that Shivakumar’s leadership would help the government focus on development, governance, and preparations for future electoral challenges.
The formal swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place in the coming days, with Congress leaders and supporters celebrating the leadership change across the state.
