OpenAI Faces Internal Turmoil as Three Researchers Challenge Dismissals
OpenAI has confirmed that it dismissed three researchers last week following an internal investigation that reportedly found violations of its policies governing the handling of sensitive information.
The researchers — Jasmine Wang, Tomek Korbak and Mikita Balasny — have released a joint letter outlining the circumstances surrounding their dismissals, raising concerns about the company's internal culture and its approach to safety-related discussions.
In the letter, the researchers warned that the abrupt decision could create uncertainty among remaining employees and undermine a workplace environment that previously allowed staff to raise safety concerns openly.
Mikita Balasny, in a post on X accompanying the letter, said he believed the dismissals were linked to prioritising safety over the company's short-term corporate interests.
However, OpenAI has strongly rejected claims that the researchers were dismissed for raising safety concerns or speaking publicly about them. The company said its internal investigation uncovered serious breaches of trust beyond the issues described in the researchers' letter. OpenAI maintained that the decision to end its employment relationship with the three researchers was based on the findings of the investigation and said it stood by that decision. However,

The episode raises fresh questions about internal accountability, employee trust and the handling of sensitive information at one of the world's leading artificial intelligence companies. The researchers' account and OpenAI's explanation, however, differ over the circumstances that led to the dismissals
