Venice witnessed a charged political spectacle as dozens of activists from the Russian anti-Kremlin art collective Pussy Riot staged a provocative demonstration against Russia’s participation in the Venice Biennale, openly targeting President Vladimir Putin with slogans and Ukrainian flags.

The activists gathered near exhibition venues, chanting anti-Putin slogans and accusing Moscow of using cultural platforms to “whitewash” its international image amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict. The protest quickly drew attention from visitors, security personnel, and international media covering the prestigious art event.

Waving Ukrainian flags and holding placards denouncing the Kremlin, the group attempted to disrupt what they described as Russia’s “soft power showcase” at one of the world’s most influential contemporary art exhibitions. The demonstration added a sharp political edge to an event traditionally centered on art and culture.

Security around the Biennale area was tightened as organizers worked to prevent escalation, while authorities monitored the protest to ensure it remained non-violent. Despite the tense atmosphere, no major clashes or arrests were immediately reported.

The incident underscores how the Venice Biennale—often seen as a global celebration of artistic expression—continues to be drawn into geopolitical tensions, with the Russia-Ukraine conflict casting a long shadow over cultural diplomacy and international participation.
