Bengaluru, June 13:
Young Indian tennis sensation Srishti Kiran has taken the global tennis circuit by storm, emerging as the World No.1 in the Under-13 category and bringing immense pride to the country. Hailing from Bengaluru, the teenage prodigy has been making headlines with her consistent performances and rapid rise in junior tennis.
Srishti, who first held a tennis racquet at the age of three, began formal training at the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association in Bengaluru when she was just four-and-a-half years old. Guided and supported by her parents, Kiran Gopalrajan and Vinaya Kiran, she quickly displayed exceptional talent beyond her age group. By the age of seven, she was already winning back-to-back titles at national-level tournaments, including the AITA Under-10 championships.
Her recent achievement of reaching World No.1 in the ITF Under-13 rankings is particularly remarkable, as she achieved the milestone after participating in only eight ranking events, fewer than the usual required tournaments. Despite the limited exposure, she accumulated enough points through consistent title-winning performances to top the global chart.
In a sport where India has long struggled to break into the top tier of junior and senior world rankings, Srishti’s achievement stands out as historic. The highest-ever singles ranking for an Indian in men’s or women’s tennis remains Vijay Amritraj’s World No.18 finish in 1980, making her rise even more significant for Indian tennis.
Speaking about her approach to the game, Srishti has said she focuses more on her own performance than her opponents. “I don’t focus on who is across the net. My attention is on the ball and my game. I believe I am my strongest opponent,” she has reportedly said, reflecting her fearless mindset.
Her father expressed immense pride in her accomplishments, noting that junior rankings can fluctuate but reaching the top at her age is a major milestone. The family, once driven by his own unfulfilled sporting dreams, now sees Srishti carrying forward that legacy with determination and discipline. With her current form and rapid rise, Srishti Kiran is widely being seen as one of India’s most promising future stars in tennis.
