Congress Losing the Narrative? Why India's Grand Old Party Is Failing to Tell Its Own Story

New Delhi: As the Congress party struggles to regain lost political ground across India, a growing section of political observers believes the party's biggest failure is not electoral strategy, but its inability to remind the nation of its own historic legacy.

From leading India's freedom movement to building the foundations of modern India after Independence, Congress played a central role in shaping the country. When India became independent in 1947, the nation was battling poverty, food shortages, widespread illiteracy and deep social divisions based on religion, caste, language and region. Millions lived in extreme poverty, literacy levels were dismal, and the country lacked the industrial and agricultural strength needed to compete globally

It was under Congress governments that India laid the foundations of democracy, scientific institutions, public sector industries, higher education, dams, railways, and agricultural reforms. The Green Revolution, expansion of irrigation, establishment of IITs, AIIMS, ISRO and several national institutions emerged during decades of Congress rule. The party helped transform a fragmented and impoverished nation into one of the world's largest economies and democracies

. Political analysts argue that after 2014, Congress gradually slipped into a defensive position, allowing rivals to define its image rather than aggressively projecting its own contributions. Despite repeated accusations from the BJP portraying Congress as a party focused on minority appeasement, the party has largely failed to counter the narrative with force or clarity. Instead of taking its development record and national legacy directly to the people, Congress leadership has often appeared focused on attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, industrialists such as Gautam Adani, and other political opponents.

Critics within the party believe Congress must move beyond being seen as representing any particular community or vote bank and re-establish itself as a party for every Indian, irrespective of religion, caste or region. They argue that the party's message of inclusive development, constitutional values and national unity has failed to reach younger generations, many of whom have limited knowledge of India's early post-independence struggles and nation-building efforts.

With leaders such as Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and the party's senior leadership attempting to revive the organisation, many believe this is the moment for deep introspection. If Congress wants to emerge as a credible national alternative to the BJP, it must reclaim ownership of its history, reconnect with the aspirations of the country's majority population, and convince voters once again that the Congress story is, ultimately, the story of India's journey as a nation.

Whether the party can rewrite the political narrative or continue reacting to one written by its opponents may determine its future in Indian politics.
