New Delhi: As Pakistan attempts to procure J-35 fifth-generation stealth fighter jets from China, another crucial defense discussion has emerged between India and Russia. The proposal for Russia to sell its advanced Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft to India has now gained strategic significance.
During the BRICS summit, the issue of the Su-57 came up for discussion once again in light of Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to India. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov revealed on September 8 that discussions are ongoing regarding the sale of these aircraft to India. This has once again heightened interest in the Delhi-Moscow defense partnership.
Currently, the Indian Air Force does not have any operational fifth-generation fighter jets. While the indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project is progressing rapidly, it may still take time to be fully operational. It appears that Russia's proposal is to quickly deliver a limited number of Su-57s to fill this gap.
Russia claims that the Su-57 features stealth design, advanced sensors, the capability to carry long-range weapons, high speed, and agility. Furthermore, efforts are being made to make the proposal attractive by including aspects such as local production, technical cooperation, and technology transfer in India.
