New Delhi, March 11: A traditional handloom from Andhra Pradesh grabbed national attention in Parliament on Wednesday as Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra appeared in an elegant Ponduru Khadi saree, celebrating India’s rich weaving heritage. The beautifully crafted saree, originating from Ponduru in Srikakulam district, is famous for its extremely fine texture and delicate hand-spun cotton. Considered one of the finest varieties of Khadi in the country, Ponduru Khadi has a centuries-old legacy maintained by skilled local weavers. Her choice of attire quickly drew appreciation from handloom lovers, cultural enthusiasts, and artisan communities, who see the gesture as recognition for traditional weavers struggling to keep the craft alive. Observers say the moment has brought national spotlight to Andhra Pradesh’s renowned handloom tradition, giving a much-needed boost to the artisans of Ponduru and promoting indigenous textiles on one of the country’s biggest political stages.
