Washington: The political battle surrounding Michigan’s U.S. Senate race is heating up, with Vice President JD Vance launching a fresh attack on Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed. Vance dismissed El-Sayed as “crazy” while pushing back against the Democrat’s criticism of the Trump administration.

Vance said criticism is part of the job when serving as vice president. “I’m the vice president. It comes with the territory,” he said, while accusing El-Sayed of attacking him despite positioning himself as a champion of working Americans.

The clash comes after El-Sayed emerged as the Democratic nominee in Michigan’s Senate race and intensified his campaign around healthcare, economic pressure on families and workers’ rights. His campaign has prominently backed Medicare for All, along with broader efforts to reduce the influence of money in politics.

Vance, meanwhile, has sought to portray El-Sayed as far outside the political mainstream and warned that his progressive agenda could hurt Michigan’s middle class and auto industry. The vice president has also raised the prospect of El-Sayed becoming president in the future while sharply criticizing his political agenda.

The escalating rhetoric highlights the growing importance of Michigan in the 2026 Senate battle. El-Sayed is set to face Republican Mike Rogers in the general election, with the contest viewed as significant to the fight for control of the U.S. Senate.

With both sides now trading increasingly personal and ideological attacks, Michigan’s Senate race is rapidly becoming a major national political showdown — putting El-Sayed’s progressive platform directly against the Trump-Vance agenda.
