Beijing, April 15, 2026:

In a strong message reflecting growing global uncertainties, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called for deeper cooperation between Europe and China to defend multilateralism and stabilize the international order. His remarks came after a high-level meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Tuesday.

Sánchez stressed that the world is witnessing increasing geopolitical fragmentation, economic tensions, and challenges to global governance systems. He emphasized that Europe and China, as major global players, must work together to uphold rules-based international cooperation and prevent further erosion of multilateral institutions.

Echoing these concerns, Xi Jinping warned that the current international order is “crumbling” under mounting pressure from unilateral actions and global conflicts. He called for stronger partnerships and renewed commitment to collective decision-making frameworks, highlighting China’s willingness to engage constructively with European nations.

The meeting comes at a time of rising tensions across multiple regions, including trade disputes and security concerns, which have strained traditional alliances. Analysts view Sánchez’s outreach as part of a broader European effort to diversify diplomatic engagement and reduce over-reliance on any single global power.

Both leaders reportedly discussed expanding economic ties, climate cooperation, and maintaining stability in global supply chains. The talks also touched on the importance of dialogue in resolving conflicts and ensuring sustainable development.

The renewed push for Europe-China alignment signals a shifting geopolitical landscape, where nations are increasingly seeking alternative partnerships to safeguard their interests and reinforce a weakening global order.
