Is there the heart of Lord Krishna in the idol of Lord Jagannath? The incredible mystery of the Puri temple.

A special report on the secret of the Brahma substance in the Puri Jagannath Temple, the eternal heart of Lord Krishna as described in Puranic tales, the uniqueness of the Nabakalebara, and the beliefs of the devotees.

Devotional/Cultural

One of the most sacred temples in India, the Puri Sri Jagannath Temple is a repository of numerous spiritual secrets. Among them, the most intriguing is the mythological tale regarding the eternal heart of Lord Krishna.

According to Hindu tradition, after the end of the Dwapara Yuga, Lord Krishna concluded his avatar, and his body was cremated. However, the myth narrates that his heart was not offered to the fire and continues to resonate with divine energy.

It is said that a devotee (in some accounts, a tribal leader) discovered this divine heart and placed it on a log, which was then cast into the sea. It is believed that the log traveled on the ocean waves and eventually reached the shores of Puri in Odisha.

The king Indradyumna, following divine instructions, seized that sacred log and used it to carve the idols of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra, as described in the myths. Subsequently, it is believed by devotees that this divine essence, referred to as **'Brahma Padartha'**, was enshrined in the idol of Lord Jagannath.

The Great Secret of Nabakalebara

During the Nabakalebara festival, which occurs every 12 to 19 years, old wooden idols are replaced with new ones. On this occasion, the Brahma Padartha is transferred from the old idol to the new idol in utmost secrecy.

This process is said to take place entirely in secrecy at midnight. The priests conducting the ceremony are said to bind their eyes and wear gloves while performing the rituals. During this time, there is no artificial light in the temple. The true nature of this divine substance remains a mystery to this day.

Faith or Historical Truth?

There is no historical evidence to confirm that Lord Krishna's heart is indeed present in the idol of Jagannath. Historians regard this as a mythological tale and a matter of spiritual belief.

However, for millions of devotees, this is not just a story but a symbol of Lord Krishna's eternal presence. This belief continues to attract millions of devotees to witness Lord Jagannath in Puri every year. This tale, which stands as a confluence of devotion, spirituality, and mystery, still captivates interest worldwide today.
