Washington, October 10:
Reports are emerging that a significant development has occurred in the international fuel market. It has been reported that the United States has temporarily granted permits for diesel supplies from Russia. Reports suggest that this decision was made in the context of discussions between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, questions are now arising about whether diesel prices will drop in America and how beneficial this will be for India.
Heavy diesel supply.. Will prices drop?
It is reported that over 300,000 tons of diesel will be supplied from Russia at once. There are indications that another 500,000 tons will be supplied in November, with the possibility of additional supplies thereafter. In this context, it is reported that the U.S. has granted temporary exemptions on certain transactions related to Russian diesel sales, transportation, and imports. While this permission is said to be valid until April 7, 2027, official confirmations are still needed.
Will it benefit India?
India imports a significant amount of crude oil from abroad to meet its energy needs. If the prices of oil and refined fuels decrease in the international market, there is a possibility of some relief in import expenditures for the country. If transportation costs decrease, it could have a positive impact on agriculture, industries, and the supply chain of essential goods. However, it cannot be said that a decrease in international market prices will immediately lead to lower petrol and diesel prices in India. Factors such as the value of the rupee, crude oil prices, refinery costs, and central-state taxes also influence domestic fuel prices.

Have all restrictions been lifted?
Granting temporary exemptions for certain transactions related to diesel supplies from Russia does not mean that the U.S. has lifted all restrictions on Russia. Additionally, this decision should not be viewed as the removal of all limitations on Russian crude oil purchases. The scope of the exemptions and the applicable regulations will be crucial.
..Zelensky's objection.. Is Russia gaining economic strength?
Reports indicate that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed objections to the U.S. decision. The main point of his objection is that if Russia is given leeway to sell energy, it could increase the country's revenue, thereby financially aiding its ongoing war against Ukraine.
Is an immediate price drop possible?
An increase in diesel supply in the global market could alleviate pressure on prices. However, international demand, refinery output, transportation conditions, and geopolitical tensions also affect prices. Therefore, it cannot be confirmed at this moment that diesel prices in America will significantly drop, nor that the same effect will be seen in India. The future of fuel prices will depend on how much supply increases from Russia, how far U.S. exemptions are implemented, and how the international market responds.
