Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay urges the Centre to scrap NEET and allow states to fill medical seats based on Class 12 marks.

Chennai, May 13:

C. Joseph Vijay has called on the Union Government to abolish NEET-based admissions for medical courses and restore the authority of states to admit students based on their Class 12 examination marks.

In a strongly worded statement, the Chief Minister said the current admission system places an unfair burden on students, particularly those from rural areas, government schools, and economically weaker families. He argued that a single national entrance test does not accurately reflect a student’s academic performance over two years of higher secondary education.

Vijay said Tamil Nadu has consistently maintained that medical admissions should be determined using Plus Two marks, which he described as a more equitable and inclusive method. He noted that the state’s position is rooted in the goal of ensuring equal opportunities for deserving students from all backgrounds.

The Chief Minister urged the Centre to respect the rights of individual states and allow them to design admission policies that suit their educational systems and social realities. He said such a move would help protect the aspirations of thousands of students.

The renewed demand is expected to intensify the national debate over NEET, with Tamil Nadu once again pressing for greater flexibility in medical admissions and a return to state-based selection criteria.
