As temperatures soar across Chennai, residents are grappling with an added crisis—frequent power cuts and erratic voltage fluctuations that are turning daily life into a struggle. With mercury levels climbing above seasonal averages, the city’s fragile power infrastructure is showing signs of severe stress.

From densely populated neighborhoods to suburban pockets, complaints are pouring in about sudden outages, often lasting from a few minutes to over an hour. Worse, unpredictable voltage swings are damaging household appliances, forcing many families to incur unexpected repair costs. Air conditioners, refrigerators, and fans—the only relief in the sweltering heat—are increasingly becoming unreliable.

Residents allege that power disruptions have become more frequent over the past week, coinciding with a spike in electricity demand. “We are unable to sleep at night. The power goes off without warning, and when it returns, voltage is so low that even fans don’t work properly,” said a frustrated resident from West Chennai.

Energy experts point to surging consumption driven by heatwave conditions, coupled with aging infrastructure and inadequate load management systems. While authorities have acknowledged “localized issues,” there has been no comprehensive response or timetable for resolution, further aggravating public anger.

With peak summer yet to hit its worst phase, citizens are demanding immediate intervention, improved grid management, and transparent communication from power utilities. Unless urgent corrective measures are taken, Chennai’s power crisis could spiral further—leaving millions to endure long, hot, and sleepless nights.
