DMK chief MK Stalin calls emergency meeting of MPs over delimitation concerns, warns of impact on Tamil Nadu representation and federal balance.

Chennai, April 15, 2026:

The political temperature in Tamil Nadu spiked on Tuesday after Chief Minister M. K. Stalin convened an emergency meeting of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Members of Parliament over concerns surrounding the proposed delimitation exercise.

Sources said the meeting was called amid growing apprehension that the upcoming delimitation could significantly alter the political representation of southern states, including Tamil Nadu. Stalin is expected to outline the party’s strategy and response, with a strong emphasis on safeguarding the state’s interests.

The DMK leadership has consistently argued that any delimitation based purely on population could penalize states that have effectively implemented population control measures. Party leaders fear that such a move may reduce Tamil Nadu’s parliamentary representation, weakening its voice at the national level.

Senior DMK MPs are likely to deliberate on possible political and legal options, including coordinating with other southern states to build a united front. The issue is expected to be raised aggressively in the upcoming session of Parliament

. The controversy over delimitation has been gaining momentum across the southern political spectrum, with leaders warning it could upset the federal balance. Stalin has already reached out to counterparts in other states, seeking broader consensus against what he termed as a “disproportionate impact” on the South.

Further developments are expected after the high-level meeting, which could shape the next phase of political confrontation between regional parties and the Centre.
